Promoting Obesity Prevention among Children with Developmental Disabilities and Families through Engaged Research

The PODER Project is a multi-site, 5-year project that is examining and addressing health, overweight, and obesity among Latino children and youth with developmental disabilities and their families.

Research Study #1: This study will assess the relations between social determinants of health and overweight, obesity and chronic health conditions among Latino children with developmental disabilities in a national survey. This study is led by Dr. Sandra Vanegas and Dr. Sandy Magaña (University of Texas at Austin).

Research Study #2: This study will examine the health and obesity of Latino families with children with developmental disabilities through extensive assessment of family and cultural factors, heath behaviors, child and caregiver outcomes, and social determinant factors (built environment, social-economic indicators, and community context). This study is led by Dr. Sandy Magaña (University of Texas at Austin) and Dr. Mansha Mirza (University of Illinois at Chicago).

Research Study #3: This study will evaluate the development and implementation of a family intervention to address overweight, obesity, and other health behaviors among Latino families of children with developmental disabilities. This study is led by Dr. Sandy Magaña (University of Texas at Austin), Dr. Yolanda Balcazar-Suarez (University of Illinois at Chicago), and Dr. Mansha Mirza (University of Illinois at Chicago).
